Pacific Book Review

Of all the tropes the sci-fi genre has embodied over the decades, one trope which readers have always been fascinated in seeing realized is space travel and the sustainability and use of a living space station. With so many unknowns about the survivability of Earth and the conflicts that make up most of the world, so many people have looked to the stars and wondered what it would take to build a vast space station or ship which would allow for generational travel to discover livable worlds.

A new start for the human race becomes the backbone of author L. Scott Cisney’s Chronicles of the Gods: Book One. The story follows humanity in the 24th century, when Earth becomes unsustainable and the remaining humans must take to the stars aboard the starship Calypso to find a new world to call home. Along the way, contact is made with an alien race calling themselves The Mothers, who welcome them to travel to a world called Terra Nova to settle down and call home. Along the way to their new world, The Mothers reach out to a young girl named Terra Nova Winstead, sharing her role to become the Mother of this new world to lead humanity into a new age.

This is a truly compelling and engaging epic sci-fi read. The author’s use of imagery in the writing style and the world building were next level, capturing both the emotional toll of leaving behind Earth and the perilous and unique journey across the stars that the story delved into. The character development was superb, following Terra as the protagonist throughout her life from a young girl to a woman years later. The emotional depth of her connection to her parents and others such as Hatcher as the story progresses and the introduction of The Mothers and their race, as well as the surprise dwellers on their new homeworld, helped make this feel like a truly universal story.

For those who enjoy science fiction stories, especially those which are of the epic variety and utilize real science and mathematics in their world-building and technology development within the story, this novel will truly speak to them. The author’s scientific knowledge is on full display as the book delves into the logistics of space travel and how the various technologies would theoretically get this generational ship to their destination. Combined with the themes of spirituality, love, and the identity of people as individuals, this novel feels dynamic and enthralling with each and every chapter readers devour.
