Of all the tropes the sci-fi genre has embodied over the decades, one trope which readers have always been fascinated in seeing realized is space travel and the sustainability and use of a living space station. With so many unknowns about the survivability of Earth and the conflicts that make up most of the world, so many people have looked to the stars and wondered what it would take to build a vast space station or ship which would allow for generational travel to discover livable worlds.
A new start for the human race becomes the backbone of author L. Scott Cisney’s Chronicles of the Gods: Book One. The story follows humanity in the 24th century, when Earth becomes unsustainable and the remaining humans must take to the stars aboard the starship Calypso to find a new world to call home. Along the way, contact is made with an alien race calling themselves The Mothers, who welcome them to travel to a world called Terra Nova to settle down and call home. Along the way to their new world, The Mothers reach out to a young girl named Terra Nova Winstead, sharing her role to become the Mother of this new world to lead humanity into a new age.
This is a truly compelling and engaging epic sci-fi read. The author’s use of imagery in the writing style and the world building were next level, capturing both the emotional toll of leaving behind Earth and the perilous and unique journey across the stars that the story delved into. The character development was superb, following Terra as the protagonist throughout her life from a young girl to a woman years later. The emotional depth of her connection to her parents and others such as Hatcher as the story progresses and the introduction of The Mothers and their race, as well as the surprise dwellers on their new homeworld, helped make this feel like a truly universal story.
For those who enjoy science fiction stories, especially those which are of the epic variety and utilize real science and mathematics in their world-building and technology development within the story, this novel will truly speak to them. The author’s scientific knowledge is on full display as the book delves into the logistics of space travel and how the various technologies would theoretically get this generational ship to their destination. Combined with the themes of spirituality, love, and the identity of people as individuals, this novel feels dynamic and enthralling with each and every chapter readers devour.

Chronicles of the Gods: Book One is an ambitious, sweeping work of science fiction that immediately immerses the reader in a dying Earth in the year 2340. Humanity’s last hope hinges on a desperate plan: carving out a massive asteroid, turning it into a generational starship, and launching a final exodus into deep space. What impressed me most was how the author blends this hard-science premise with deeper emotional and philosophical stakes. The technological details — ion engines, nuclear propulsion, artificial gravity created through constant acceleration — give the story a solid, believable foundation, but the book truly shines in its exploration of what it means for a fractured species to rebuild itself while hurtling toward the unknown.
The characters, ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, must balance fear, hope, and responsibility as they leave behind the ruins of Earth. Their journey becomes even more unsettling after mysterious beings known as “the Mothers” contact a child aboard the ship through vivid dreams, promising guidance and “gifts” meant to shape the future of their new world. This infusion of mysticism and cosmic intrigue elevates the story beyond a standard survival narrative. It introduces questions about purpose, destiny, and whether humanity deserves a second chance — and if so, who or what has the right to define it.
The world-building is expansive and richly imagined, and the pacing of the voyage feels both epic and intimate. The tension between onboard politics, looming existential threats, and the philosophical implications of alien intervention keeps the narrative compelling throughout. If anything, the scope of the novel occasionally threatens to overwhelm its momentum, but even those slower stretches feel intentional — the measured build-up of a much larger saga.
Overall, Chronicles of the Gods: Book One is a thoughtful and exhilarating beginning to what promises to be a profound science fiction series. It blends scientific realism, mythic undertones, and moral complexity into a narrative that lingers long after the final page. Readers who enjoy stories of interstellar survival, cosmic mystery, and the reimagining of humanity’s legacy will find much to admire here.

“What if you received a ‘message from the stars’ that you were chosen to be instrumental in shaping the future and very survival of humanity?
Chronicles of the Gods is a sci-fi epic that tells such a story. It follows a chosen group’s perilous voyage aboard the generational starship Calypso to the Cervantes star system. It explores the future (and past!) of humanity, and raises intriguing questions about our role within the greater cosmos.
The novel brilliantly weaves together themes of love, loss, curiosity, spirituality, scientific discovery, space travel, and conflict between powerful entities. Along the way, it grapples with questions of who we are, how we came to be, and where we are headed both as individuals and as a species.
Book One of the Chronicles of the Gods series (I won’t give any spoilers here) ends with a sequence of events that significantly raises the stakes for the protagonists and sets things up nicely for book two. By itself, it is a complete and satisfying read, but it also promises more to come. I sense that Book Two will take this captivating saga to even greater heights as the characters’ adventures continue.”

“I just finished reading ‘Chronicles of the Gods: Book One’. A terrific read, some really good scifi, but it was so much more. The story sweeps across time and space and gives the reader a very interesting take on how life began on Earth, through evolution, to be sure, but with a twist that it was ‘directed’, by ancient aliens who now feel that the Earth is read to ascend and help them develop the ‘intelligent and virtuous species’ on another planet, the destination planet of the starship Calypso. This all happens at the very moment that the Earth is teetering on the edge of doom. The young girl, Terra Nova Winstead, is told she will be ‘The Mother’ of the new world, by ‘Eve of Eden’, The Mother of our world, and a daughter of the ancient ‘Sky Lords’ who created the intelligent and virtuous species on our world, hundreds of thousands of years ago. The full circle shown in the book from our earliest history to our far distant future is simply breathtaking!”

I really enjoyed and recommend this book! The plot is imaginative and intriguing. I really liked the worldbuilding and space travel spanning different worlds and timelines. One cool thing is that the author is a mechanical engineer and included believable details on how the technology in the book worked which to me was really interesting and made it feel more realistic. I enjoyed the story and the ending also set things up really well for the next book. I’m looking forward to reading the next book when it comes out!”
